John Walker sent Turner on a 450-mile circuit of the Midlands to sketch specific subjects in Chester, Matlock, Nottingham, Bridgenorth and Birmingham, which appeared periodically in The Copper-Plate Magazine between 1794 and 1797.

"He walked twenty to twenty-five miles a day, sketching rapidly on his way all striking pieces of composition, and marking effects with a power that daguerreotyped them in his mind."
-Alaric Watts, 1853
