{1} In an undated expertise authored by Lionello Venturi, probably dating to the early 1940s, Venturi identifies the painting as having been in “the Emile Gavet Collection, Paris, about 50 years ago.” A French custom’s stamp appears on the back of the painting.
{2}Written in pencil on the verso: “Herzog Tassilo Festetics/ B.Pest.” Another painting in the Clowes Fund Collection was obtained by the Silberman brothers from the Festetics Collection (C10029).
{3} In the exhibition catalogue Masaccio e le origini del Rinasciemento, Casa Masaccio, San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy, 20 September to 21 December 2002, Miklós Boskovits notes that a photo of this painting residing in the Richter Archive of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., bears an annotation linking the painting to Duveen Brothers; see cat. no. 32, pp. 194-196 (ill.).
{4} A cancelled check for a painting by Uccello, made out to E. & A. Silberman, is dated 12 November 1942; see IMA Clowes Archive.
