Probably Emile Gavet, Paris. {1} probably Count Tassilo Festetics [1850-1933], Budapest.{2} (Duveen Brothers, Paris) in the inter-war period.{3} (E. and A. Silberman Galleries, New York); Dr. G.H. A. [George Henry Alexander] Clowes [1877-1958], Indianapolis, in 1942; {4} Clowes Fund Collection, Indianapolis, in 1958, and on long-term loan to the Indianapolis Museum of Art since 1971 (C10001); given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2014.

{1} In an undated expertise authored by Lionello Venturi, probably dating to the early 1940s, Venturi identifies the painting as having been in “the Emile Gavet Collection, Paris, about 50 years ago.” A French custom’s stamp appears on the back of the painting.
{2} Written in pencil on the verso: “Herzog Tassilo Festetics/ B.Pest.” Another painting in the Clowes Fund Collection was obtained by the Silberman brothers from the Festetics Collection (C10029).
{3} An oversize photograph in the Richter Archive at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. is stamped “Duveen Brothers Inc., Paris”; see also the exhibition catalogue Masaccio e le origini del Rinasciemento, Casa Masaccio, San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy, 20 September to 21 December 2002, cat. no. 32, pp. 194-196 (ill.) wherein Miklós Boskovits refers to the existence of this photograph. The Richter Archive of Illustrations on Art was given to the National Gallery of Art by Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1943.
{4} A cancelled check for a painting by Uccello, made out to E. & A. Silberman, is dated 12 November 1942; see IMA Clowes Archive.
