Turner never visited Egypt. But his popularity in 1832 was such that, when the publisher William Finden decided to issue his Landscape Illustrations of the Bible, he engaged the renowned Turner whose participation would guarantee sales. Finden handed Turner a pencil outline made of the site in 1819 by the explorer-draughtsman Sir Charles Barry. Turner improved upon it in watercolor.
