Calligraphy was used to create the intricate and complex composition of this made-to-order rug. The first inner border is inscribed with a section of Verse of the Throne (A'yat-al-Kursi), which praises God and serves as a prayer for the protection and well-being of the household.
The main outer border contains 34 different words, all titles given to God. The sunburst medallion in the center, which resembles the decoration of the domes in mosques, symbolizes the doorway into heaven.
Catherine Guffin Bain (Sarasota, Florida); given to IMA December 17, 1992.
