Shen Zhou's inscription reads:
Fan Gong's hand planted objects of a thousand years,
Fitting for descendants' nurturing care.
Over and over leaves fall returning to the ages;
Again and again good spring rises from the earth.
Watch them as Ji Zha guarded the auspicious trees.
From Zhuangzi I know the beauty of their timber;
So for you I take the brush and paint their likeness-
Bright sun, the wind, the rain awe lesser plants.
[tr. R. Edwards]
[Walter Hochstadter {1914-2007} (exchange for TR5552/1 Shen Zhou 4 seasons; value $400.)]; Eli Lilly, Indianapolis; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1960.
