In 1789 Turner was engaged by the art collector, Charles Townley, to come to Lancashire to sketch ten views in his neighborhood for a history of the parish written by local antiquarian Dr. Thomas Whitaker.

As a respected Associate of the Royal Academy, Turner bridled at the dictates of Townley and his snub as "the draftsman," leading Dr. Whitaker to remark that "Turner has all the irritability of youthful genius."
