This vessel is an example of “contemporary” African art, which is based on traditional forms. However, unlike “traditional” art, this vessel was never intended to be used as a beer vessel, but rather was destined to be sold in the South African and international art market. Indeed, the bottom of the vessel is signed by the artist, something not found on traditional vessels.
