Ubu began life in 1896 as a character who epitomized the mediocrity and stupidity of middle-class officialdom in an absurdist play by Alfred Jarry.
Vollard became obsessed with the character and wrote or published ten works on the subject ending with the Reincarnations of Father Ubu in 1928, illustrated by Rouault.
