Currier & Ives’ Western River Scenery depicts nothing more western than the Mississippi River. Until the end of the 19th century the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi was the “West,” and the unpopulated vastness beyond the river was only vaguely comprehended as the “Far West.”

Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Ballard; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1980.
