Docent program
IMA docents are trained volunteer educators interested in leading groups through the IMA's permanent collection. They lead tours for children and adults to enhance their experience of art. The docents work under the direction of the IMA’s Education Division. For more information about the IMA docent program, please call the docent hot line at 317-923-1331, ext. 588.
The IMA recently produced a video about becoming a docent -
How are docents selected?
The first step is to fill out the request form for information about upcoming orientation meetings. After attending an orientation, the next step is an interview with IMA education staff and experienced docents. Docents have strong public speaking skills, an ability to interact comfortably with groups, and a strong desire to study and learn about art. Personal experience with art is not necessary, but a love of learning and art is.
The Docent Program strives to include people who represent the diversity of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and nearby communities. The number of docents selected for each training class varies depending on the needs of the Museum.
Docent training
Initial training takes a year of study. Classes are held once a week for three hours. Program length and day may vary based upon institutional needs. The course of study includes slide lectures on art history and gallery talks, team research projects, and practice presentations to classmates. There is a strong emphasis on teaching techniques and how to tour the IMA's collection. Training is given by the IMA education staff, outside instructors, curators, and experienced docents.
To receive more information on how to become a docent, contact the IMA's docent line 317-923-1331, ext. 588.
Time commitment
After completing the initial training, you are assigned to the programs where you are most needed for your first year. New docents make a 3-year commitment to the program beyond the training period. You are asked to do a minimum of 20 tours per year, attend all docent meetings, and participate in continuing docent education programs.
Rewards of being a docent
As a docent you have the opportunity to become a more effective communicator and successful educator. The docent course of study develops reading, research, and art analysis skills. As a vital link between the IMA’s visitors and its works of art, the docent meets and interacts with a variety of visitors.
