Educator Professional Development

Our professional development offerings seek to provide a range of opportunities for educators to learn, be inspired, relax, and engage with the objects in the permanent and temporary collection. Access descriptions of our current and upcoming educator events designed to nourish educators' personal learning as well as provide strategies for use in the classroom and beyond.

Professional Growth Plan (PGP) Points Available

The IMA offers credit for educators seeking opportunities to earn PGP points towards license renewal. Many of our public programs, professional development workshops, and other events are eligible for PGP points (one point for each hour of participation). Please click on the descriptions below for a list of upcoming PGP point events. Contact the Manager of School and Teacher Programs for more information on receiving your PGP Point certification.

Classes

Classes at the IMA take you outside of the classroom and into the galleries or the gardens. The IMA offers classes related to the permanent collection, exhibitions, and the gardens and grounds. Find descriptions of upcoming classes.

Special Events

Educators are important partners for helping art novices and experts unlock the profound stories embedded within the objects at the IMA. We often feature special events for educators, such as Evenings for Educators, Educator Open House, or special panels for seeking feedback on programming (general descriptions below). Evenings for Educators

Educators are invited to the IMA on special evenings designed to inspire, rejuvenate, and provide opportunities to network with colleagues and friends. These evenings take different formats, but the overall focus is to facilitate a relaxed experience of sharing ideas with colleagues. For example, our Summer Book Club for Teachers features novels and nonfiction literature of interest to teachers. We meet once a month by the IMA fountain and share conversations about the book, teaching, and life in general. Another popular format, Over Dinner, features evenings that are led by a panel of three teachers sharing their best practices over dinner with a small group of educators.

Educator Open House

Educator Open House events are an opportunity for educators to view featured parts of our collection or temporary exhibitions with other educators. Curators or museum educators will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional information. Special activities and curricular materials will be available.

Catalogue Chats

These informal campus visits offer individualized support for connecting courses to the temporary and permanent collections at the IMA. Gather a group of your colleagues or schedule a meeting on your own to sit down with a museum educator to preview exhibition catalogues and content in advance of your course planning. Faculty Forums

These informational meetings will be held in advance of the opening of a temporary exhibition, as an opportunity for faculty to include an exhibition in syllabi and curricula for the upcoming semesters. IMA curators will provide a background on the structure and vision of an exhibition, as well as discuss specific works of art. Museum educators are also in attendance to discuss potential programming collaborations.
