The exhibition begins in the Pulliam Family Great Hall with Flight (2011), a sculpture that follows the imagined curvilinear trajectory of a toy rocket that has been deployed into space from a “launch pad” that doubles as the plinth for the work. The flexible aluminum tubing of the flight path has been manipulated by the artist to simulate a three dimensional drawing that spirals upward, extending two stories before landing on the fourth floor, where the exhibition continues in the McCormack Forefront Galleries. Flight echoes a series of projects that McCutcheon developed for his first solo exhibition that address the metaphorical connotations of flight, particularly ambition and emergence, concepts that remain central in the new body of work presented here.
