Christmas at Lilly House 2010

November 20, 2010-January 2, 2011

American Christmas decorations demonstrate both continuity and change in delightful combination from colonial times to the present. Christmas at Lilly House uses the American country house setting to explore the decorative ideas of the 1930s and 1940s, offering an opportunity to see the ways that familiar motifs such as trees, wreaths, and evergreens were enlivened with refreshing touches of newer fashions.
This year’s decorations will feature a hot air balloon presenting the more traditional idea of the mistletoe ball, a mantel tree of draped, shimmering fabric, and a more modern spiral tree inspired by ideas from the 1930s. The drawing room, with its hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, will feature multi-tiered wire plant stands as the centerpieces of the decorative treatment.
