Science and art come together in the IMA’s Conservation Science Laboratory where in-house scientists study works of art to learn more about them and how to best conserve them. Using a recently acquired Uzbek garment, Coat of Many Colors will illustrate how scientific imaging and dye analysis has narrowed the possible creation date on this object and contributed to our understanding of the influx of modern European synthetic colorants into traditional Central Asian textile arts of the early 20th century.
