Want an art history lesson without a big time commitment? Each Art Jolt is an information-packed course in just two hours!

Modernism? Postmodernism? We’ve heard the terms, but what do they really mean? Learn how these ideas affected the design of objects like chairs, lamps, and teapots. This class will spend time in European Design Since 1985: Shaping A New Century. Led by Elizabeth Mix from Butler University, the first session will discuss Modernism and the second session will address Postmodernism. Take only one session or join us for both. You will complete several projects designed to introduce the process of developing three-dimensional artwork from concept to model. The work of designers affects us every day. The car you drive, the chair you sit in, the magazine you read…nearly every object you interact with was designed by someone. What will the things we use everyday look like in the future? Our week-long Spring Break Camp for 5-12 year olds focuses on an investigation of the creative processes used by designers and artists to take an idea from brainstorming through finished project. Students in the camps will complete a series of 2-D and 3-D projects. These projects aim to teach basic elements and principles of design, and to encourage creativity and imaginative problem solving. A visit to European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century and discussions of objects from the museum’s permanent collection will highlight works related to the camper’s projects. Please bring a sack lunch.

Jeff Carter, Senior Designer, Target Stores, discusses the retail giant’s democratic design-for-all philosophy and his own experience collaborating with designers such as Michael Graves and Isaac Mizrahi. Meet film director Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) and see his latest documentary about the creative process of product design. The film features designers who shape our manufactured environment and our interfaces with mass-produced objects, including the people behind IKEA furniture and the iPod. Enjoy the world premiere of a new documentary short (2009, dir. Amie Knox, 25 mins.) about Dutch designer Hella Jongerius. Originally trained in textile design, Jongerius works in multiple media with equal dexterity. With unorthodox structures and lush palettes, Jongerius reinterprets classic forms by “adding a new dimension, a different function or a different story.” The film includes curators R. Craig Miller (IMA), Paola Antonelli (Museum of Modern Art), and manufacturers of her designs (Rolf Fehlbaum of Vitra) discussing Jongerius’ vision and contributions to the international design arts. Hella Jongerius: Contemporary Archetypes was produced to accompany the exhibition European Design Since 1985.

After the film, join in dialogue with Amie Knox, producer and director of the film; Kirk Brown, founder of the Design Onscreen film foundation; Lee Vander Kooi, assistant professor of Visual Communication at Herron; and IMA design curator R.
