Exhibition Information
This exhibition is Sam Easterson’s first chance to showcase a large portion of his extensive library of footage (link to video). Nature Holds My Camera is organized into five thematic areas: In Motion, Taking Action, Reflections and Shadows, Point of View and Storytelling. The areas guide both new and experienced museum visitors through an exploration of art and the natural world. The exhibition showcases nine different video loops, and each loop is comprised of several shots.
In order to create this unconventional viewpoint of the natural world, Easterson attaches small modified security cameras to the bodies of the animals, which have included a sheep, falcon, scorpion, buffalo, wolf, turkey and tarantula, among many others. Tumbleweeds and pitcher plants have also held cameras for Easterson. Easterson does not use anything that is invasive, and the animals are not harmed during the short time that the video is recorded.
Easterson will be creating new footage—from the perspective of an Eastern mole—specifically for the IMA exhibition. This new piece will feature video from a mole’s perspective, and cameras mounted in mole’s tunnels also will offer a glimpse of moles in daily life.
After exploring the exhibition, share your point of view through hands-on activities such as an ongoing, online community discussion. In addition, a specially developed Art & Nature Pack for adults and children will be available for use in the IMA’s future Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park. Each Art & Nature Pack contains drawing media, a magnifying glass, binoculars, a compass and other tools for exploration. The Art & Nature Packs contain handheld video receivers to take to the Art & Nature Park in order to view Easterson’s footage collected from an Eastern mole.
Nature Holds My Camera: The Video Art of Sam Easterson is made possible through the generous support of an anonymous donor.
