This bloodstone cup was created by one of the greatest mid-19th-century Parisian jewelers, Jean-Valentin Morel, in response to a commission in 1854 by the Duke of Luynes. The cup is decorated with rubies, sapphires and emeralds as well as several types of enamel work for which Morel was famous. It is ornamented with two antique cameos provided by the Duke. Morel publicly displayed the cup at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he received the highest honor, the Grand Medal. The cup remained in the Luynes family’s possession until it was acquired by the museum.
