In advance of Indianapolis Opera’s La Traviata (May 13 & 15), enjoy a screening of Camille, an atmospheric romance starring Greta Garbo, Lionel Barrymore and Robert Taylor. Verdi’s opera La Traviata and the film Camille are both adaptations of the Alexandre Dumas 1852 novel, La Dame aux Camelias, the story of a beautiful, doomed courtesan/prostitute. When a beautiful courtesan (Garbo) falls in love with young nobleman she sacrifices her happiness and he his fortune in the name of love. The film is a luxurious, melodramatic love/tragedy from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The evening includes a musical teaser for La Traviata courtesy of the Indianapolis Opera Ensemble.
