It tells the true story of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), an Englishwoman who ventures to Siam as a live-in governess to the royal children in the 1860s. Soon after arriving Anna finds herself often at odds with the stubborn monarch (Brynner); and the two eventually learn to overcome their differences and begin to understand one another.
