(1956, directed by Walter Lang, 133 mins., G) A musical masterpiece, The King & I features an Academy Award-winning performance for Best Actor by Yul Brynner, a treasured score by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It tells the true story of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), an Englishwoman who ventures to Siam as a live-in governess to the royal children in the 1860s. Soon after arriving Anna finds herself often at odds with the stubborn monarch (Brynner); and the two eventually learn to overcome their differences and begin to understand one another.
