Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (dir. Steven Shainberg, 2006, 122 mins., R)
Stifled by the traditional expectations of her family and tired of being her husband’s assistant, photographer Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman) falls in love with an enigmatic neighbor (Robert Downey Jr.), who introduces Arbus to an underworld of marginalized people that ultimately inspires her photography. Only loosely based on Arbus’ life, the film makes “eccentric visual and aural references to Alice in Wonderland and Beauty and the Beast,” writes Slant Magazine.
