Topsy-Turvy
The Toby
Warm up for the Indianapolis Opera’s production of The Mikado next season with a film dramatization of the adventures of librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Sir Arthur Sullivan. In the extravagant Topsy-Turvy, Gilbert (Allan Corduner) and Sullivan (Jim Broadbent) start a cold war that threatens to end their creative partnership. When associates work overtime to bring them back together, the result is The Mikado. Thoughtful and winningly acted, Topsy-Turvy garnered four Academy Award nominations and won for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup.
(1999, dir. Mike Leigh, 160 mins., R)
Before the film, Butler University Associate Professor of Theatre and freelance costume designer Wendy Meaden discusses the costumes to be used in the Opera's production of The Mikado, the costumes in Topsy-Turvy, and the impact designers' choices make.
Presented by the IMA and the Indianapolis Opera.
