Contemporary Art Society
Since 1962, The Contemporary Art Society (CAS) has promoted the understanding, appreciation, and collection of contemporary art. Through a dynamic series of social and educational events. CAS members enjoy privileged access to curators, artists, private collections, and travel. CAS members significantly impact the collection of contemporary art at the IMA by contributing to acquisitions and participating in voting to bring selected works into the collection.
CAS regularly hosts lectures featuring nationally and internationally renowned artists who have included: Vik Muniz, Layah Ali, Kiki Smith, Amy Cutler, Ghada Amer, James Casebere, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Dawoud Bey, Alfredo Jaar, Orly Genger, Judy Levy, Josephine Meckseper, Tara Donovan and many more. Through their generous support, Contemporary Art Society (CAS) members help build the Museum’s contemporary art collection.
The Contemporary Art Society is led by a Board of Directors and is advised by Tricia Y. Paik, Curator of Contemporary Art, as well as a Museum Affiliate liaison.
Erwin Wurm: Euclidean Exercises
6:30 pm / Conversation with artist Erwin Wurm
7:15 pm / Special Performance by Erwin Wurm
Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion
CAS Reception, immediately following
Sutphin Fountain Room
Hear internationally recognized Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. Visiting from Vienna, the artist will speak with Curator of Contemporary Art Tricia Y. Paik about his highly original One Minute Sculptures, his artistic process and other works. Immediately following the conversation in The Toby, Wurm will present a special, one-time performance titled Carry the Curator in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion.
The conversation and performance coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Erwin Wurm: Euclidean Exercises. With his irreverent One Minute Sculptures, Wurm invites visitors to complete his artworks. Each of these One Minute Sculptures, as enacted by a different visitor, becomes an entirely unique and fleeting sculpture that can be captured only by camera and one’s memory.
From January 16 – June 21, 2015, visitors will have the chance to encounter other works by Wurm throughout the museum including photos, videos and other sculptures.
