About IMA Lab

Our Philosophy

We aspire to make the impossible, possible through a unique collaborative style of content creation and the application of technology for the cultural sector. We believe in the benefits of collaboration and the value of open source tools. Rooted in our own experiences and driven by our passion for culture and technology, we provide solutions for organizations that can be shared with peers and enhanced over time. Simply put, we not only aim to serve the needs of our clients, but to make a difference in the larger community.

Why Would the IMA Do Consulting for Other Museums?

IMA Lab pursues opportunities that will enrich the field of museum and not-for-profit technology. Technology spending typically accounts for a small percentage of the overall budget of most museums. Because museums do not generally have budgets that allow for specially tailored solutions, museums are often left with software and technology situations that are inadequate to meet their needs. Commercial software vendors have little incentive to invest in the museum technology field as it is a relatively small and specialized vertical market.

Museums do not have the time, financial resources, or technical experience to achieve quality software tools that are easy to use and maintain. Collaborative platforms and shared tools leverage the experiences and talents of each museum, and open-source technology projects owned by a community of invested stakeholders, offer opportunity for this type of cross-institution collaboration to take hold. Shared tools are a better investment than proprietary solutions.

Simply put, the IMA Lab team aims to not only serve its own needs, but to make a difference in the larger museum community.
