Making the Altarpiece
Sebastiano Mainardi’s altarpiece was painted exactly five hundred years ago. Although it survives more or less intact, its appearance has changed drastically since 1507, the year in which the artist dated it. Created during the height of the Italian Renaissance, the painting was commissioned to adorn the altar of a church.
