Beadwork plays an important role in the courtship rituals of young Ndebele women.
The styles of Ndebele beaded clothing and ornaments have remained constant over the last several centuries. Until 1940, Ndebele beadwork was predominantly white, incorporating simple geometric designs in a limited range of colors.
In the past, beadwork was worn every day; however, it is now reserved for important ceremonies such as initiations, weddings, and funerals.
Today the IMA is open 11 am to 9 pm. ADMISSION IS FREE.
