Still Life by eighth blackbird

Chicago-based Grammy Award-winning ensemble eighth blackbird brings their brand of adventurous, unpretentious contemporary sound to Indianapolis. The program includes composer Stephen Hartke's Pulitzer Prize finalist, Meanwhile (2007), evoking the surreal world of an imaginary Asian court theater; Philip Glass's Music in Similar Motion (1969), with its radically bald, hypnotic repetitions; Missy Mazzoli’s Still Life with Avalanche (2008), described as “a pile of melodies collapsing in a chaotic free fall”; and Philippe Hurel’s ..à mesure (1996), a swirling hive of notes. The program finishes with Steve Reich’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet (2007), a return to the rhythmic intensity synonymous with the composer's most venerable compositions, featuring eighth blackbird performing simultaneously live and pre-recorded.

Enjoy pre-concert chat in The Toby lobby at 6:30 pm. Presented by the Ensemble Music Society and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Promotional support provided by WFYI.
