Horticultural Society

Mission Statement

Founded in 1972, the Horticultural Society is the IMA‘s special interest group for its grounds and gardens and offers its members opportunities to share gardening experience and expertise. The Horticultural Society also maintains an extensive horticultural library, located in Newfield on the IMA campus. Horticultural Society members enjoy lectures featuring noted local, national and international speakers, travel opportunities to gardens throughout the US and abroad, and opportunities to volunteer in the IMA gardens, greenhouse, and the Horticultural Society Library.

The Horticultural Society is led by a Board of Directors and is advised by Mark Zelonis, The Ruth Lilly Deputy Director of Environmental and Historic Preservation, as well as a Museum Affiliate liaison.

May 10-19, 2012

Join Mark Zelonis, The Ruth Lilly Deputy Director of Environmental & Historic Preservation on a tour of Northern, Italy. Journey through one of the most beautiful areas of Italy visiting Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary gardens on lake shores with mountain backdrops, in the lush countryside and in the historic cities of Verona and Venice. Appreciate the tradition of horticulture, art and architecture dating from Roman times in the Lakes and in Verona. In Vicenza encounter the highly influential architect Andrea Palladio whose Villa La Rotonda inspired Jefferson’s Monticello. In Venice be dazzled by the early mosaics on the island of Torcello and in St Mark’s, the beauty of Venetian architecture, and see the most recent conversion of Punta della Dogana by Tadao Ando.
